Mexico City is one of the first places I’d add to a Mexico itinerary. The capital has historic landmarks, museums, neighborhoods, food and modern city life. Travelers can visit the Zócalo, Metropolitan Cathedral, Palacio Nacional and Templo Mayor before going to Chapultepec Park and its museums. For a different side of the city, check out neighborhoods like Roma Norte and Coyoacán.

Outside the capital, for those interested in architecture and history, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and Querétaro are great options.

Guanajuato is famous for its mountain setting, colorful streets, churches and plazas.

San Miguel de Allende attracts visitors with its charming colonial atmosphere.

Another interesting stop is Querétaro, especially if you like to stroll through historic sites and find local arts and culture.

Travelers looking for places off the beaten path should also consider Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí. Their historic centers, churches, museums and ties to Mexico’s mining history provide another dimension to a trip around central Mexico.

Beaches, Ancient Ruins, and Regional Culture

The Yucatán Peninsula is one of the most attractive destinations for those who wish to combine beach and history. Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Tulum and other places give you the chance to swim, snorkel, dive and relax on the coast. At the same time, travelers can visit famous archeological sites, such as Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Ek Balam and Cobá.

Oaxaca is a whole other experience. Its colorful markets, traditional food, historic buildings and strong indigenous cultural heritage make it an important destination for cultural travelers. Nearby archeological sites like Monte Alban, Mitla and Yagul provide the opportunity to learn more about the ancient history of the region.

Another destination I would highlight is Puebla, a historic city that lends itself easily to a trip to Cholula. Colonial architecture, churches, museums, food, and the surrounding mountain scenery make it an interesting addition to a Mexico itinerary.

Copper Canyon presents a very different landscape for adventure seekers. The area is located in Chihuahua and features dramatic canyons, mountains, waterfalls and hiking and nature activities. One of its most memorable experiences is making a trip aboard the El Chepe railroad, which runs through the canyon region and offers impressive views along the way.

Discovering Mexico’s Cities, Coastlines, and Small Towns

Guadalajara and Tequila are great for anyone wanting to learn more about Mexican culture. Guadalajara is known for its historic center, museums, architecture and mariachi traditions, and the nearby town of Tequila is surrounded by agave fields and has strong ties to the production and cultural history of tequila.

San Cristóbal de las Casas and Palenque in southern Mexico provide a blend of colonial architecture, indigenous culture and ancient Maya history.

San Cristóbal is known for its cobbled streets, traditional markets and the indigenous communities around it.

Palenque, an archeological site which is surrounded by tropical scenery, is an especially interesting destination for lovers of history and nature.

If you’re heading for the beach, Puerto Vallarta offers sandy beaches, mountain scenery, a historic center, and lots of outdoor activities. Visitors can relax on the coast, sightsee around the city, try local food or take part in activities like snorkeling, hiking and ziplining.

Another beach destination to consider is Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo. It’s a blend of old fishing village Zihuatanejo and the more developed resort of Ixtapa.

Further north, Baja California Sur offers a combination of desert and marine experiences.

Los Cabos is famous for its beaches, water activities, dining and resorts, while La Paz is a place to explore the Sea of Cortez and its abundant marine environment.

Exploring Mexico Beyond the Major Tourist Destinations

One of the things I love most about Mexico as a travel destination is the variety of smaller communities. The country’s Pueblos Mágicos, or “Magic Towns,” are recognized for their cultural traditions, history, architecture, and unique local character. Destinations such as Pátzcuaro, Cholula, Bernal, Atlixco and Zacatlán can give travelers a taste of a less boisterous Mexico.

As a travel writer, I believe Mexico is a destination that should be explored beyond its famous resorts. It’s home to ancient civilizations, colonial cities, colorful communities, diverse landscapes and regional food, so there are many different travel experiences all in one country. Whatever the objective – discovering history, relaxing on the beach, discovering nature or experiencing local culture – Mexico has lots of options for travelers seeking an unforgettable trip.
