The residents of Brgy. Cambunang in Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro, often face the threat of river overflow and flooding caused by heavy rains and typhoons, putting their lives and livelihoods at risk. However, with the completion of the Cawacat River Control project by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Southern Mindoro District Engineering Office (DEO), flood-related damage in the agricultural communities has been significantly reduced.

According to a report by Southern Mindoro District Engineer Annielyn E. Padullo to DPWH MIMAROPA Regional Director Gerald A. Pacanan, CESO III, the project spans 180 linear meters and features a 6-layer gabion wall reinforced with steel sheet piles to ensure the safety of the community. This structure is designed to prevent the river from overflowing and minimize economic losses due to flooding.

The newly constructed river control system is part of DPWH’s ongoing commitment to protect communities from the damaging effects of natural disasters while promoting the growth of local economies.
