Romblon, often called the “Marble Capital of the Philippines,” is a province where natural beauty, history, and community resilience come together. Beyond its pristine islands and centuries-old landmarks, Romblon continues to make strides in safeguarding its people and preserving its heritage.
In Odiongan, an upgraded flood defense system strengthens protection against climate risks, ensuring safer communities for generations to come. Off its southern coast, Carabao Island, famed for its white-sand beaches and clear waters, offers a serene escape and a glimpse of sustainable island tourism. At the heart of Romblon town, the historic Saint Joseph Cathedral stands as a living testament to faith and artistry, blending coral stone architecture with local craftsmanship. Together, these highlights reflect Romblon’s harmony of progress, culture, and natural wonder.
Upgraded Flood Defense for Odiongan, Romblon

The Romblon District Engineering Office (DEO) of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) continues to prioritize preparing communities for climate change. According to the agency, the Libertad Flood Control Structure (Downstream) in the Municipality of Odiongan, Romblon, is now complete.
DPWH MIMAROPA Regional Director Gerald A. Pacanan, CESO III, received a report from Romblon District Engineer Elena M. Castilan. As part of the project, a 581 linear meter flood control structure with concrete slope protection was built. The long-term goal of this project was to prevent flooding and riverbank erosion in the surrounding areas.

It has already been successful. The recent southwestern monsoon and other severe weather events did not cause flooding or significant damage to the communities surrounding the site.
Through this project, DPWH Romblon DEO demonstrates its continued dedication to preserving livelihoods, property, and lives while strengthening communities’ resilience to climate change.
Carabao Island

The official name of Carabao Island is San Jose, and it is located close to Tablas Island’s southernmost point in Romblon. Hambil is the name given to it. Its shoreline features numerous secret coves and vast stretches of immaculate white sand. Of these, Hambil Beach is the most visited.
It is a stunning beach with fine white sand, a clear blue sea, and overhanging coconut trees. It is an excellent location for swimming and snorkeling because the calm surface conceals a vibrant underwater world.

The well-known Boracay is just 30 minutes away by boat from Carabao Island, also known as the “twin beach.” The peace and natural beauty are the primary draws of this more sedate location.
Saint Joseph Cathedral

Saint Joseph Cathedral is the oldest and most well-known Roman Catholic church in Romblon. In the fifteenth century, it was constructed. The church was built by the Recollect Fathers between 1640 and 1726. Its stunning architecture is composed of stones and coral bricks.
Due to significant renovations over the years, including a marble-coated facade and a bell tower that enhances its historic charm, it has grown even more alluring. Beautiful pieces, religious artwork, and original concepts for the church’s interior have been created by talented local artisans.

People attend church to offer prayers to the town’s patron saint, Santo Niño de Romblon. An important celebration of the saint is the Biniray Festival, which takes place every other week in January.
Development goes hand in hand with heritage and nature. From building resilient infrastructure in Odiongan, to showcasing the unspoiled beauty of Carabao Island to preserving the timeless grandeur of Saint Joseph Cathedral, the province continues to move forward while honoring its past. These efforts not only safeguard its communities but also highlight Romblon as a place where progress, tradition, and natural beauty thrive together, making it a destination worth celebrating and preserving.
