South Korea Uncovered: 15 Beautiful Destinations Every Traveler Should Explore

I would love to visit South Korea, a country that has a mixture of modern cities, historic landmarks, beautiful islands and tranquil mountain landscapes. I am a travel writer based in Asia, and I love finding places that offer visitors more than just pretty views. South Korea is a country with a unique blend of traditional culture, city life, food and outdoor adventure.

Travelers can build out itineraries from the busy streets of Seoul to the beaches of Busan. There are national parks, historic palaces and tiny islands where visitors can get close to nature away from crowded cities.

In this travel guide I will be highlighting some of the places you should visit in your travels to South Korea. I want to inspire readers to discover amazing places and get ideas for a memorable trip.

1. Bukhansan National Park

Bukhansan National Park is a fantastic place for hikers and outdoor lovers. The park, close to Seoul, has mountain trails, rocky peaks, forest views and temples. It’s located in a great area for visitors that want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city without going too far.

One of the biggest attractions is the view from the top of the mountains, where hikers can see the contrast between the tall buildings of Seoul and the surrounding nature. Visitors can choose different trails according to their experience and fitness level.

If you are planning a trip to South Korea, Bukhansan is a good option for those who love to take pictures, enjoy nature and outdoor activities.

2. Seoraksan National Park

Seoraksan National Park is famous for its beautiful mountains, woodland trails and seasonal colors. It is particularly beautiful in autumn when the trees are painted red, orange and yellow.

There are many ways to see the park’s scenery. Visitors can hike mountain valleys, view rocky peaks or take a cable car for less strenuous sightseeing. There are hiking trails of varying difficulty so be sure to choose a trail appropriate for your level.

If you are looking to experience the natural beauty of South Korea beyond the major cities, I would recommend Seoraksan as part of a longer itinerary in the country.

3. Jirisan National Park

Jirisan National Park is another must for mountain and outdoor adventure lovers. It has a big mountain landscape, slopes covered with forest and long hiking ways.

Jirisan may require a bit more planning than parks closer to Seoul. But its peaceful surroundings make it attractive to visitors who wish to spend time in nature.

Travelers enjoy mountain views, forest walks and a chance to experience a quieter side of South Korea. If you want something off the beaten track and more outdoorsy it might be worth checking out.

4. Hallasan National Park

Hallasan National Park is located on Jeju Island, a premier destination in South Korea for nature lovers. A large volcano, Hallasan, rises above the island and is surrounded by parkland.

Visitors can hike trails, explore forests and take in scenic overlooks. The landscape changes with the seasons, changes throughout the year.

Before heading out on a hike, travelers should check on trail access, weather conditions and, where applicable, any reservation requirements. If you like a more relaxed journey, you can also check out the beaches, waterfalls and coastal areas of Jeju.

5. Juwangsan National Park

Juwangsan National Park is a good place for tourists who want to see mountains and walk on walking paths. The landscape consists of rocky cliffs, deep valleys, streams and woods.

The park offers a chance to see nature in a more chilled out way. Depending on the route, visitors can visit scenic rock formations, walk along streams and take pictures of the mountains around.

I would add Juwangsan to a travel list for people looking for natural attractions outside of South Korea’s most famous destinations.

6. Saryangdo Island

Saryangdo is an island getaway with mountain ridges and broad ocean views. This is a nice combination of coastal and hiking.

The island is especially appealing to travelers who enjoy walking on high trails overlooking the islands and sea around them. Some trails are steep so visitors should wear proper footwear and check trail conditions before heading out.

To get to the island, some transportation planning is needed, so check ferry schedules and local travel info ahead of time.

7. Ulleungdo Island

Ulleungdo is an island in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) that is famous for its unique volcanic terrain, steep cliffs and beautiful coastline. It doesn’t have the vibe of the larger cities in South Korea.

There are coastal paths, scenic drives, fishing villages and mountain trails to explore. The island is also known for its local food and its traditional fishing culture.

Weather can affect ferry travel and travelers should be prepared to be flexible. For a break from the hustle and bustle of city life in South Korea, Ulleungdo is a wonderful choice.

8. Bijindo Island

Bijindo Island is a coastal area with scenic beauty and beaches. The landscape is unique, a narrow strip between two bigger areas, with nice views to the sea on both sides.

Visitors can spend some relaxing time on the beach, and walk the coast and natural scenery of the island. “It’s a nice escape for someone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and have a quiet escape.”

Travelers are advised to check ferry schedules and accommodation availability prior to setting out, particularly during peak holiday times.

9. Muuido Island

Muuido Island is a pretty good option for travelers who like beaches, coastal walks and watching the sunset. It is more convenient from the Seoul area as it is closer to Incheon than some of South Korea’s more remote islands

Visitors can view the shoreline, photos and nearby walking trails. The coastal scenery can look very different at low tide and high tide.

For a bit of coastal experience on your city-centric trip, Muuido is a good option for a short trip.

10. Seoul’s Royal Palaces

Those interested in South Korea’s history and architecture will be drawn to the royal palaces. Seoul is home to several historic palaces such as Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace.

Gyeongbokgung, its big gates, its old buildings and its open courtyards. Another is Changdeokgung. There are lovely gardens and architecture that blends into the natural surroundings.

If you are visiting Seoul for the first time, I would recommend seeing at least one palace. These places are an opportunity to learn about Korea’s royal history and take photos of traditional Korean design.

11. Sokcho

Sokcho, on South Korea’s northeast coast. It is also convenient for trips to Seoraksan National Park so you can combine your seaside jaunt with your mountain jaunt.

Visitors can stroll the beach, visit the local seafood markets and see views of the coastal line. There are also restaurants, shops and places to relax after a day’s hiking.

And if you want to make your trip a little bit more comfortable, consider spending the nite in Sokcho, right next to the national park.

12. Busan

Busan is a large coastal city in South Korea and a popular destination for lovers of the beach, food, and culture. It has beaches, markets, temples and scenic view points with a city touch.

Gamcheon Culture Village is one of the popular attractions, with its colorful hillside buildings and art-filled streets. Visitors can also enjoy the local seafood markets and the views of the coast.

Busan is a great addition to any South Korea itinerary. It has a different vibe than Seoul, but there is a lot to see and places to eat.

13. Jinhae

Jinhae is especially famous for spring cherry blossom season. People come to the city for the blossoming trees that line its streets, parks and waterways.

The Jinhae Gunhangje Festival is one of Korea’s most popular spring festivals, held annually. Travelers should plan accordingly, as popular viewing sites may be crowded during peak bloom.

Even without the cherry blossoms, Jinhae offers coastal views, walking paths and local cuisine. But for most travelers it is spring that puts it on the itinerary.

14. Seoul

Seoul deserves special mention, as it offers many of the experiences that have made South Korea a popular destination with international travelers. The capital city has historic landmarks, shopping districts, traditional markets, modern buildings and a vibrant food scene.

Visitors can go to places like Hongdae, Myeongdong, Itaewon and Gangnam, each with its own vibe. Street food, Korean barbecue, cafes, fashion shops and entertainment joints are found during the day and into the nite.

The traveler interested in Korean culture will also find traditional markets, historic neighborhoods and places associated with music, television and popular culture.

Seoul is also a great base to explore the rest of the country. Public transportation is good so you can get to many of the attractions without having to rent a car.

15. Seoul’s Traditional Markets and Mountain Trails

There are smaller experiences that make a trip more memorable, other than the famous sights. In traditional markets like Gwangjang Market, visitors can taste Korean food, local products and the daily city life.

Visitors can try local favorites, browse the market stalls and soak up the energy. There are also mountain trails in Seoul, including around Namsan and Inwangsan, where visitors can enjoy outdoor activities and city views.

Walking trails through markets are a great way to see the different sides of the capital without spending the whole trip in shopping centers or major tourist attractions.

Final Thoughts

There is so much to do in South Korea, from hiking national parks to lounging on an island to touring a historic palace. Foodies, shoppers and entertainment seekers will find Seoul and Busan ideal. Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will find Seoraksan and Hallasan great.

As a travel content writer, I think one of the best ways to plan a meaningful trip is to choose destinations that fit your interests. If you are into history, spend your time in palaces and other cultural highlights. The adventurous at heart may want to spend some time hiking and exploring the coast.

For your first time, I would advise starting with Seoul and Busan, and then throw in a national park or island if you have time. Well planned South Korea is a great destination that promises a wonderful trip with beautiful scenery, cultural discoveries and thrilling experiences.

Before you leave, check transportation schedules, seasonal weather, attraction hours and local travel advisories to make your trip easier.
