Limasawa is the smallest municipality in the province of Southern Leyte. It is famous for being the place where the Magellan expedition held the Easter Sunday Mass of 1521. Its historical significance still draws visitors but the island has so much more to offer than its place in Philippine history.

For longer stays, Limasawa offers a gentler, calmer pace of life to travellers. It is a perfect choice for individuals who wish to escape the busy pace of city life, with its pristine coastline, verdant landscapes, tranquil settlements and simple island living.

Getting to the Island

The journey to Limasawa starts on the M/V Evershine 2, one of the largest passenger vessels to the island. Passengers arrive using a makeshift pier since the main port was seriously destroyed by Typhoon Odette in 2021. Only the entry arch and the passenger shed remained.

Upon arriving in Limasawa, even with its few facilities, tourists instantly feel that this is a location where life flows at a different pace.

Finding a place to live might also be very easy. Many private houses have been turned into homestays for travellers, apart from resorts. Most of the hotels are near the shore, so it is simple to get a feel of the island’s coastal atmosphere.

Dakdak Resort: Peaceful Getaway

One of the first things to visit is Dakdak Resort located at Barangay Lugsongan, Its location is one of the most easily reached attractions from the poblacion.

The road to the resort goes via the sole high school on the island, then climbs and eventually descends into the eastern section of the island.

At Dakdak Resort, visitors are welcomed by a well-maintained garden and walks lined with gumamela and bougainvillaea. The quietness of the atmosphere makes it feel like a secluded sanctuary.

The grounds around the property are just as nice. Wild vines sprawl over some of the vegetation on the side of the road and the beach below gives a restful picture of the sea. The noise of busy towns is replaced by the noise of breaking waves and sometimes the cricket at nite.

Island Lagoon Exploration

Island Lagoon, near the northern portion of Limasawa, offers a new kind of adventure.

Visitors have to climb down a flight of steep stairs to get to the natural pool which is located at the foot of a cliff. The difficult walk pays off with the sight of turquoise, crystal-clear water encircled by enormous rocks.

The lagoon is surrounded by boulders where visitors can find numerous places to jump in the water. Bamboo bridges connect some of the boulders, adding to the natural attractiveness of the location.

Island Lagoon is now one of the most beautiful natural sites on the island with its crystalline water, steep cliffs and massive rock formations.

Sunset at Totoy-totoy Peak

As the day draws to a close, you have one more chance to view Limasawa from above as you head to the summit of Totoy-totoy Peak.

The summit is named after two formations that look like a woman’s bosom. In addition to its strange name, the location has historical value.

Leyte-based historian Rolando Borrinaga has studied the site and argued the planting of the cross on March 31, 1521 could have been nearby.

Although thick clouds can at times obscure the sunset, the vista from the summit is breathtaking. From the top you can see the town main and another part of the island. Below, too, the town hall stands out among the buildings.

When The Island Goes Silent

After sundown Limasawa is quite calm.

There are not as many dining opportunities as in bigger tourist locations. Pink Apple, considered to be the only restaurant on the island, may not always provide dishes to suit a solo diner. The good news is that modest BBQ stands along the road provide simple options.

The evening is also an opportunity to meet the local folks. Talking to people in the community frequently reveals the warmth and generosity that you might find in small island villages.

By 8 p.m. or so the rest of the island is peaceful. There are a few open roadside shops and residents are starting to get ready for bed.

Limasawa offers a tranquil nightlife. There are no clubs, KTV pubs or discos as in most cities. Late suppers are eaten by neighbours, groups of people congregate for drinks on the streets, and fisherman return home from the sea after a nite of fishing.

From time to time the calm is broken by the noise of the giant generators that provide power to the island.

Explore Limasawa by Boat

One of the best ways to admire Limasawa is to see it from the water.

Boats are simple to find all along the shore and you may book an island tour with the local fisherman. A boat trip can give you a whole different perspective of the island than if you explore it on land.

Familiar attractions seem different from the water. ” Cliffs look more dramatic, beaches feel more solitary and rock formations are much more stunning.

There is also a possibility of viewing marine life on the way. You may see dolphins and sea turtles but this is never guaranteed.

The Island Outside of Its History

Limasawa is often mentioned because of its historical significance, but its beauty goes beyond its association with Magellan’s journey.

The island still has a lot of green, unspoiled areas. Large areas are abandoned, and parts of the shore have natural rock formations beneath towering cliffs.

Many of these places haven’t been turned into packed tourist spots, as have the more commercialised ones.
