Philippines has numerous famous beaches like Boracay, El Nido and Siargao. But these sites are highly crowded, especially in the summer, and hotels and tours can be pricey. Burias Island is a good option if you prefer a quiet spot with clear sea, white sand and starry skies. A tranquil place to rest away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Located at San Pascual, Masbate, Burias Island is It is located between Ragay Gulf, Burias Pass and Sibuyan Sea hence fishing is its main livelihood. Tourism is a new industry for the island and is growing fast, offering extra revenue to local fisherman. During a normal tour, you will get to see five smaller islands:

1. Animasola Island – A tiny island that you can stroll around in minutes. The white sand is intermingled with tiny boulders and there are rock formations. Wear slippers, as the sand gets very hot in summer.

2. Snake Island (Islang Dapa) – Named from the sea snakes that are abundant in the vicinity. It is a flat island and the surface is rough and spiky, so be careful walking on top. Cliff diving is common here, but carry a life jacket if you don’t know how to swim.

3. Tinalisayan Island (Sand Bar) – Famous for its long white sand bar which appears on low tide. The lake around it is crystal clear.

4. Sombrero Island — Named for its hat shape. Most overnight travellers stay here as it is privately owned and is the largest island in the group. A modest hut is available for rent at ₱2,500 per nite, while a cottage is available for as cheap as ₱700. It’s much cheaper if you bring your own tent. Swim, star gaze and have bonfires.

5. Alibijaban Island — Located south of Ragay Gulf, this island is home to several bird species and mangrove forests. It’s technically part of San Andres, Quezon not Masbate. Its sand is white, its coastlines are rugged, and its waters are blue-green.

Overnight Stay Tips:

• Best time to go: February to June (dry season)
• Stargaze on Sombrero Island Bring a blanket or mat
• Bring a torch
• Bring plenty of cash, as there are no ATMs on the islands.
• Bring snacks. Food in small stores is limited and overpriced.
• Enjoy the journey with your family or friends!

Getting There (DIY):

Take a bus from Manila to Naga, then a jeepney to Pasacao Port, Camarines Sur. First jeepney leaves at 5:30AM, ₱50–70. Take a boat from Pasacao Port to Burias Island. Boats leave at 7:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 2:00 p.m.
