Safer Shores for Mogpog: Enhanced Coastal Protection

The project has provided crucial protection to residents who have long suffered from strong wave surges, particularly during typhoons and extreme weather conditions. These surges frequently damaged properties and disrupted livelihoods, especially for local fisherfolk whose daily income relies on stable coastal conditions.

In a report submitted by District Engineer Richard Emmanuel P. Ragragio to DPWH MIMAROPA Regional Director Gerald A. Pacanan, CESO III, the project consisted of the construction of a 183.00-linear-meter concrete coastal road reinforced with 9.0-meter Z-type steel sheet piles and geotubes.

Additional works included the building of concrete shoulders on both sides, a single-barrel RCBC, pavement markings, and the installation of 12 solar-powered streetlights.

Poctoy White Beach

One of the well-known beaches in the Philippines is Poctoy White Beach, which is situated in the seaside town of Torrijos in Marinduque. A kilometer of immaculate blue waters and fine white sand make this beach ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Additionally, it offers a picturesque view of Mount Malindig, the province’s highest point and a popular destination for novice mountain climbers.

Putong is a warm custom that is typically used to greet visitors to Poctoy White Beach. Locals crown visitors with flowers as part of a traditional song and dance ritual.

Like most Philippine islands, Poctoy White Beach has excellent seafood, including fresh-sourced yellowfin, squid, crabs, and shrimp every day. These can be prepared to visitors’ preferences in canteens along the shore for a fee.

In addition to hiking Mount Malindig and snorkeling, Poctoy White Beach is a place to camp and go kayaking. The Tres Reyes Islands, also referred to as the Three Kings Islands, are made up of the Gaspar, Melchor, and Baltazar Islands, where visitors can also enjoy island hopping.

Holy Cross Catholic Church in Marinduque

At the heart of Marinduque stands the Santa Cruz Church, a symbol of the province’s rich history and cultural heritage. Its intricately preserved retablos, original ceilings, and centuries-old pulpit reflect the enduring Spanish architectural influence that continues to fascinate and inspire visitors today.

Constructed in 1760 in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Municipality of Sta. Cruz, the church has withstood the passage of time while preserving its original interiors and furnishings. Despite renovations, it remains a showcase of the community’s deep spiritual roots and the masterful craftsmanship of the colonial era.

Today, the Santa Cruz Church welcomes both devout pilgrims and curious travelers, serving as a living testament to Marinduque’s cultural legacy. Visitors are especially encouraged to witness the Parish Fiesta, held every May 3, which highlights the vibrant traditions and faith that have long been cherished by the local community.
